There were a number of finalists in each category. Most of the ones for the villain needing a hug award were games where the villains were truly despicable, including Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4, Borderlands 2 and surprisingly the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game, Dead By Daylight. I can definitely see why Far Cry 3 made the nomination for that category given that people still talk about Vaas to this very day, but lamented that he wasn't the main villain of the game.

Some of the other recurring nominees on the list that didn't walk away with an award included The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, where a lot of people thought it deserved something but just came up short in each of the categories it was in. And there was also a lot of DOOM on the list of nominees. It did end up winning in the category of "Boom Boom".

Many other fan-favorites were also nominated, including Dota 2, ARK: Survival Evolved and even Life Is Strange. Some of 2015's top games also popped back up a few times, such as Rocket League and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. However, they just didn't pull in enough fan votes to secure a win for the first annual Steam Awards.

Also, Microsoft should really take note about Age of Empires II... that game seems to have a lot of staying power. Even though the game didn't win, it was nominated for the "Test of Time", and according to Steam Spy, it's fast approaching nearly 4 million owners. It seems pretty obvious that they had a really, really good formula with that game, and it really has stood the test of time. Maybe we'll see a new entry in the Age of Empires series sometime down the line that builds off the winning formula they managed to achieve with Age of Empires II HD?

I'm curious to see what Valve will have in store for the end of this year when the 2017 awards pop up during the next Winter Sale. There are a ton of huge games due to release on Steam throughout this year, so the nominees and categories should be exciting.
