Blizzard Entertainment revealed a new game at BlizzCon 2011 today. It's called Blizzard DOTA and is a tongue-in-cheek strategy inspired by WarCraft III custom map "Defense of the Ancients."

In "DOTA"-style games like Heroes of Newerth or League of Legends, two teams of players take control of powerful hero units. Each team then works together to destroy their opponent's base. They level up over the course of the match by destroying structures or enemy units.

Blizzard DOTA is the same sort of game. The key difference is that it uses characters from Blizzard games like StarCraft and WarCraft. The description of the game makes it clear that they're not trying to pretend that this cross-over game has a serious story behind it:

"In a tiny, trans-dimensional pocket universe sit two dark and terrible gods. One red. One blue. To amuse themselves, they kidnap great heroes from across time and space! And those heroes come from one company: BLIZZARD! These heroes are forced to fight to the death in an endless battle with no purpose... other than ladder points."

According to the end of the trailer Blizzard OTA is "coming soonish."
