Gamers who purchased Rock Band this fall and ended up with a broken guitar have an extra present waiting for them this nondenominational holiday season. In addition to giving these frustrated rockers a brand-new guitar, publisher Electronic Arts is offering them a free game as well.

Customers who reported their faulty guitar to Electronic Arts in order to get a free replacement received an email earlier this month from EA that stated "By the time you receive this, your replacement guitar should be on its way to you. However, the Rock Band team is committed to providing a world-class customer experience and we do not believe we have met this commitment in connection with your request. As a token of our appreciation for your patience and understanding, we will be offering you a FREE EA game." This week those customers were sent the URL of a section of the EA Support Site where they can choose a game from a drop-down list. The list actually has some pretty un-crappy games, including Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars and several of the 08 incarnations of EA Sports titles. It's a pleasant surprise for cynical gamers expecting EA to mail out free copies of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's Haunted House Mystery or Horse Betting 05 (both of which I'm pretty sure I made up). You can even get another copy of Rock Band, oddly enough...but just the software.

Customers eligible for the offer have until January 11th to select their free game. It's a pretty generous window of time; usually when a company offers a great deal, they make the deadline for redeeming it extremely short in order to cut down on the amount of people who actually cash in on it. Once again, a pleasant surprise for the cynic. The late deadline makes me wonder if they're anticipating a few broken guitars on Christmas morning (see? there I go again). Overall, though, this offer is a nice gesture from EA. In the end, who can argue with free stuff?
