It was bound to happen. The two titans of "screw you first, provide content later" have finally butted heads in the most ridiculous ways imaginable: over social "Ville" type games. This is one of those stories where I wish I was smart enough to make up something this stupid.
Since I spent the majority of my time laughing over the absolute absurdity of this whole thing, I'll only touch over the notable points Lutopia does a really good job of explaining, point for point.
So basically, if you haven't heard, a lot of gamers have grown to the point of hating EA for a number of reasons, and Zynga isn't far behind despite being in the industry for such a small amount of time. Their motto has been to imitate in the smallest way possible while reaping as much profit as possible and leaving all forms of creativity and ingenuity by the wayside. Heck, according to SF Weekly Zynga's CEO Marcus Pincus was quoted as saying...
"I don't fucking want innovation," ... "You're not smarter than your competitor. Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers."
Oh yeah, that's who we need headlining the next stage of the gaming industry, a guy who doesn't give a crap about the actual product just the numbers that the product generates.
His comments kind of mirror John Riccitiello in a conference call where he was talking about stripping away vital gameplay functions and turning them into microtransactions, such as having to pay for more bullets. Don't believe me? Check out the video right here.
For those of you who don't know, EA has been looking for ways to expand their operations because their stock is tanking and people sort of hate them. They've been exploring mobile and casual games but it's been a slow uphill climb.
As Lutopia reported, Zynga is already in the casual-farming business and they see EA as trying to step in on their territory. It's hilarious because EA recently released SimCity Social and their newest trailer, which you can view below, is a direct dig at Zynga's cheap Ville type games.
Yeah so if you think that's nothing, apparently Zynga wanted to combat this with their game The Ville, which, as you can see, is basically identical to EA's game...or maybe it's the other way around. Anyway, check out Zynga's trailer below.
Zynga is also employing a rather nagging ad on Facebook that directly puts EA's SimCity in the line of fire, with the ad reading "Sims dragging you down? Fun lives here. Play THE VILLE". Check out the ad right here.
These are two of the most hated companies in gaming right now (with Activision-Blizzard popping its head in there every once in a while) and they're actually fighting for your dollars! It truly is "LOL" worthy.
The worst bit of it all is that everyone has labeled Zynga as the new Electronic Arts, as they've been buying up studios left and right trying to find a hit instead of actually making a good game, this included many of their Ville games, Wild Needle and their recent acquisition of OMGPOP which became famous for the CEO flipping out over an employee who didn't want to sell his soul for greed.
This is like that old AVP ad where it goes "Whoever wins, we lose." I think that just about sums it up for both EA and Zynga.
