Kick butt and don’t even bother to take names in Fightback, the latest free-to-play action game from Ninja Theory, available now worldwide on iOS.

Back in the glory days of the arcade, the beat-em-up genre was king, giving players a chance to “clean up the dirty streets” or “save the kingdom” with a mad flurry of kicks, punches and throws. Nowadays, the genre has seen a bit of a resurgence in a handful of indie downloadable titles and, most recently, in the console release of Dragon’s Crown.

The latest offering being added to the steadily growing heap of genre standouts is Chillingo and Ninja Theory’s Fightback. And yes, that’s Ninja Theory, as in the team behind console games Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and, most recently, DMC: Devil May Cry.

Apparently the studio decided to go smaller and free-to-play with their latest offering, serving up Fightback for iOS at no initial charge. But just because it’s on the smaller screen doesn’t mean it’s necessarily a smaller game, as you’ll see from the above trailer that Fightback looks to cram in quite a bit of graphical power and more than enough action to leave your thumbs sore.

“We’re very excited to be debuting on mobile and tablet with Fightback, a game in which we’ve delivered beautiful visuals and engaging combat gameplay tailored specifically for touchscreen devices,” said Ninja Theory Product Manager Dominic Mattews. “With the help of Chillingo and by virtue of the game being free, we are looking forward to reaching a wider audience than we have ever been able to before.”

That shouldn’t be very hard, as Ninja Theory’s games have so far gone criminally under the radar for most gamers. I’ve played all three of their above mentioned titles and had an absolute blast, yet the company’s games somehow manage to constantly be ignored in sales. That shouldn’t be a problem here, as Fightback won’t cost you a dime to get into.

Reminiscent of the era when beat-em-ups were king, Fightback features a classic 80’s action movie vibe, giving players a chance to take out the trash with tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Fightback is a truly unique experience on mobile,” said Chillingo COO Ed Rumley in the launch announcement. “Ninja Theory has achieved perfection with their gesture-based controls and the game looks phenomenal.”

If you’re in the mood to revisit a classic genre, or maybe you’re just looking for a game to keep you busy through the holidays, then maybe Fightback will help fill that gaping hole in your gaming life. At $0, the asking price is certainly reasonable. To try it out for yourself, head on over to the App Store and get to downloading.
