GSC Game World announced today that they're making a third installment in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. shooter series. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call Of Pripyat will be released this autumn for the PC.

Call of Pripyat, first revealed a couple weeks ago by GSC Game World's Sergey Grigorovitch, takes place after the events of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The main character in this game is a Ukrainian Secret Agent sent into the Zone - the lawless, radiated zone surrounding an alternate history version of Chernobyl, Ukraine - to conduct an investigation.

Pripyat uses an updated version of the X-ray Engine that powered Shadow of Chernobyl and prequel Clear Sky. In their announcement, GSC revealed that the game will feature an updated interface, revised side quest system, and new monsters. Once you finish the campaign, you'll be able to continue exploring the world, Oblivion style.

Seems like they're trying to correct the rough edges of the series with Pripyat. Though Chernobyl and Clear Sky were both in bad need of polishing, there's something really gripping about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. setting and the grand scope of the games. One of the better post-apocalyptic games out there, to be sure.
