Rockstar Games revealed today that Grand Theft Auto III will turn 10 years old on October 22nd. They intend to mark the anniversary by releasing mobile ports and special edition merchanidse.

"Grand Theft Auto III showed us the potential of open world games," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "It helped set the vision for the company, and we have been expanding on those possibilities with every game ever since."

The mobile version of Grand Theft Auto III, arriving this fall, will be supported on the following devices:
  • Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
  • Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
  • Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
You'll be able to try out this new version of GTA III at New York Comic Con this weekend. Rockstar will also bring a gallery of art from the game to the convention as well. If attend NYCC, you'll get a chance to win special edition GTA III and Rockstar Games merchandise.

The Rockstar Warehouse will be adding special GTA III merch throughout October. Starting today, you can pre-order a limited edition action figure of GTA III protagonist Claude. The action figure, which goes on sale on October 20th, is a 1:6 scale figure dressed in his signature bomber jacket and cargo pants. A Liberty City prison jumpsuit and collection of weapons are also included. Three of these action figures will be given away to lucky Rockstar Social Club members this weekend.

GTA III debuted on the PS2 in 2001. It was the first three-dimensional Grand Theft Auto game released, and is responsible for making the series into the juggernaut it is now. As of 2008, the game had sold 14.5 million copies.
