The new Halo: Spartan Assault game has officially been announced by Microsoft for Windows 8 and Windows 8 Phones. The game is a top-down, isometric shooter where players will assume the role of a Spartan and blast through opposition with a plethora of weapons made famous in previous Halo titles.

The game – despite being a lower budget title for phones and Windows 8 – seems to hearken back to the days of old when games were made to be fun, engrossing, addictive experiences that didn't rely on “whales”, “breakthrough moments” for advertising or microtransaction “hooks”. Halo: Spartan Assault will be a good old fashioned romp through an alien world, similar to old school titles like Alien Shooter or Total Carnage, really digging deep into classic arcade shoot 'em up action.

Spartan Assault also ties in nicely with Halo 4, allowing players to unlock progress and achievements from the mini-arcade shooter for the big console game.

The more surprising twist is that it looks as if Microsoft finally put a little faith in mixing up the kind of character you play, as one of the main characters you can choose to dive into battle with is a female Spartan named Sarah Palmer. It's so zoomed out in the actual game that you won't be able to tell male from female anyway, but they at least went with it.

You can look to get your hands on the new title this July for only $6.99. Barring any microtransactions, this might be a small title worth owning for some nostalgia-oriented action. You can learn more over at the official website.
