Just Cause 2's multiplayer mod has been released to the public. You can download the free community creation through Steam right now.
This mod allows multiple players to join up in the previously single-player-only open-world game. It's not just a two-player co-op or 10-player deathmatch experience. You can have hundreds of players wreaking havoc on the same server. Players can compete in deathmatches, races and destruction derbies. They can also battle for territory.
The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod's been in development since 2010, the year that Just Cause 2 arrived in stores. It's taken a lot of time and energy to turn the sandbox action game into a massively multiplayer experience. There's still a ways to go, too.
"We had a rocky start at first; we're not going to deny it," the development team said during last week's beta test. "Plagued by frequent server crashes and lag spikes, day one of the test was completely unplayable."
They said that they've made many stability and performance improvements since then. Still, you're playing 0.1.0 of the mod. Keep your expectations in check when you download it.
The only thing you'll need in order to play the mod is a copy of Just Cause 2. The system requirements for multiplayer are virtually identical to the base game:
