Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios have announced the third major update for free-to-play MMORPG, Neverwinter, taking gamers on a frigid quest into the “Curse of Icewind Dale.” And what of a release date? Why, it’s available as of right now.

Set within the Dungeons and Dragons Forgotten Realms universe, Neverwinter gives players a chance to live out their fantasy adventuring dreams in a vast and dangerous world. We’re talking fast combat, massive dungeons and the ability to explore the legendary city of Neverwinter and its surrounding territories.

Since launch, two big content updates have given players even more reasons to return to the lands of Neverwinter, including a spiffy Foundry system that lets players create their own quests for their fellow adventurers to enjoy. These handmade quests are then seamlessly integrated into the game proper, giving player the opportunity to feel like they’ve had a hand in the creation of Neverwinter and its evolving lore. That’s especially appropriate considering the fact that the game was born out of D&D, which is itself all about creativity and experiencing a world that you help to create.

As for this third update, though, it’s all about new story content as players finally get to explore the mysterious regions of Icewind Dale. Along with all of those new locations, players will enjoy enhance open world PvP, a new Black Ice mineral to mine and loads of new quests to dive into. In order to keep the confrontations nice and regular, players will need to choose between two opposing groups, the Ten-Towners and the Arcane Brotherhood.

According to Cryptic Executive Producer and COO Craig Zinkievich, getting this latest expansion out to the masses is considered a huge milestone for the developer.

“Releasing our third major update less than a year after launch is a substantial achievement,” Zinkievich said in a press release. “Many compelling new features have been added into the latest Module, including new open world PvP and PvE content. We’re committed to continually bringing our Neverwinter player high-quality and engaging new content, and our players will discover great new gameplay and story content in Curse of Icewind Dale.”

For those already late into the game, you can expect new bosses, encounters and iconic locations to explore. There’s also new end-game content to dip into thanks to the Hunter Ranger Paragon Path, just to keep you busy until the next update. At the rate these things are coming out, we’re guessing said wait won’t be all that long to begin with.

For those of you who already play the game but are interested in the new content, simply boot up Neverwinter and download the latest update. Everyone else who is thinking about dipping their toes into the MMO waters, simply visit the game’s official website, sign up, log on and get to playing.
