The Oculus Rift is gearing up for an early 2016 launch on the consumer market. While right now all that's available are highly expensive devkits, Facebook and Oculus plan to get the rift up and out into your hands as soon as possible. They also plan on doing so with a free game included in the package... CCP's upcoming EVE: Valkyrie.
PC Gamer picked up the news based on the latest trailer that was released for EVE: Valkyrie, the multiplayer spin-off of CCP's very popular player-organic MMO EVE Online. You can see the trailer below, which focuses heavily on the VR immersion aspects of the multiplayer combat simulator.
Even just watching that brief bit of footage I was almost succumbing to a sense of vertigo. I can only imagine how it will feel with a VR headset on like the Oculus Rift.
Oculus founder Palmer Lucky commented about the EVE Online spin-off being included with the Oculus Rift as a companion app with the virtual reality headset, stating...
EVE: Valkyrie is one of the most anticipated virtual reality games, and one of the first true VR games to go into development. It perfectly captures the promise of immersive gaming, shooting you into a sci-fi adventure as you pilot a spaceship in search of combat. Battling your friends (and enemies) in multiplayer space dogfights is the ultimate VR thrill, and we’re excited to partner with CCP to bring this experience to Rift owners everywhere.
The feedback on the YouTube page pretty much point out the very thing I was thinking about while watching it: cybersickness will be a real thing.
But let's not focus on knocking the experience; I think it should be pointed out that EVE: Valkyrie looks phenomenal. The special effects, the frame-rate, the vehicle movement, velocity and thrust all appear to exhibit a proper kind of mass while traveling in space, which really helps with making it seem as if the ships are there and taking substantial damage during the dogfights.
If you're coming off the EVE Online experience and you're looking for a game that expands on that experience then you're not really going to find it in EVE: Valkyrie. This game is purely combat space simulation for multiple players who just want to fly around in densely populated space arenas and blast the living crap out of each other while wearing their VR headsets.
The game does feature the ability to unlock new weapons and gear for your ship, as well as the neat function to swap out a ship or its loadout during mid-match. It's an interesting take on the typical multiplayer combat formula.
According to CCP, this EVE Online spinoff will be due for release in 2016 for the PlayStation VR and for PC with other compatible VR units. Of course, if you buy an Oculus Rift you will automatically get a copy of the game bundled in with the headset. For more info feel free to visit the game's official website.
