StarCraft 2 players will have a huge patch waiting for them today. This update contains the data for upcoming expansion pack Legacy of the Void.

Blizzard says that the background download will be available through the Battle.net desktop app for anyone who has the latest version of StarCraft 2 loaded on their computer. You don't need to have pre-purchased Legacy of the Void, though. Guess they want to make it as easy as possible for you to pull the trigger on a purchase:
The download will be around 5GB in size and include things like models, textures, art files, and other upcoming Legacy of the Void content that is already complete. By making this data available early, you’ll have less to download once Legacy of the Void is released.

The background download is encrypted and won’t make any changes to the live game or Battle.net service until Legacy of the Void is released. In the meantime, you will be able to play StarCraft II as normal, and your in-game experience should remain unaffected by the download.

You'll keep downloading the game as long as the desktop app is open and you don't have any games running. If an update or installation of another game is running, the Legacy of the Void pre-load will be paused. You can also pause or resume the download manually.

Legacy of the Void will launch on November 10th. If past Blizzard games are any indication, the game will officially unlock at 12 AM Pacific. If you've got the preload finished by then, you should be able to jump right into the expansion.

In the meantime, you can play a three-mission prologue to Legacy of the Void called "Whispers of Oblivion." These missions star Zeratul and bridge the gap between Heart of the Swarm and Void. They were previously exclusive to pre-purchase customers but now anyone can download them - even if you just have the free "starter edition" for SC2.

Legacy of the Void pre-purchase customers will also unlock a new character for Heroes of the Storm. Artanis, the Protoss warrior who also stars in Void, will be unlocked for these buyers on October 20th. The character will go on sale for other Heroes of the Storm players on October 27th.

Void can be pre-purchased through Blizzard in two varieties: the $39.99 standard edition and $59.99 digital deluxe edition. The latter comes with the following Protoss-themed items for Blizzard games:
  • Archon battle pet ready to join your side in World of Warcraft
  • Void Seeker mount for Heroes of the Storm
  • Protoss card back for Hearthstone
  • Protoss-themed portraits and unit skin for StarCraft 2
Legacy of the Void is a standalone expansion so you'll be able to buy and play it even if you don't own StarCraft 2 or Heart of the Swarm.
