Today GOG.com added fans' most-requested game to its library. System Shock 2, the survival horror first-person shooter, can be downloaded for $9.99.
System Shock 2 takes place on the Von Braun, an experimental ship on its first interstellar voyage. After responding to a distress call, the ship is infected by a mysterious alien race known as The Many. The player takes on the role of a soldier onboard the ship who must put a stop to the infection.
SS2 became a cult classic because of the way it blended the shooter, survival horror and RPG genres. The shoot-em-up action was backed up by a healthy supply of scares. Players could choose one of three character classes and upgrade their skills over time. The different equipment and abilities available to players allowed them to beat the game in different ways.
The game is credited with inspiring future first-person action games that valued player choice. Irrational Games, who co-developed SS2 with Looking Glass Studios, went on to create the BioShock series. Looking Glass alumni Warren Spector and Harvey Smith later made Deus Ex. Smith also served as designer for last year's hit Dishonored. You can see traces of System Shock 2's gameplay in each of these titles.
The re-release of System Shock 2 was made by Night Dive Studios. It's compatible with Windows 7, 8, XP and Vista. A number of digital extras, including a soundtrack, manual and concept art, are also included with the purchase.
