Epic Games announced today that the long-running and highly lauded, award-winning game engine, the Unreal Engine 3, is currently available for the Windows 8 and Windows RT platform. So what does this mean? It means that game designers who aren't publicly lambasting Windows 8 and Microsoft's imperialistic control over digital software can start getting to work on planning UE3 projects for Windows 8.

To commemorate the launch Epic unveiled the “Citadel” demo for tablets and mobile devices running in a Windows 8 environment. A small teaser to get the “Ooohs” and “Aaaahs” flowing from the crowd at the IFA 2012 event in Berlin, Germany.

Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games had a few comments to share about the support for UE3 in Windows 8 runtime environments, saying...
“The Unreal Engine 3-powered ‘Epic Citadel’ demonstration for Windows RT tablets implements our full DirectX 9 pipeline, with shaders and materials, all running beautifully on Tegra 3,”... “By porting the full engine as opposed to a modified mobile version, NVIDIA and Epic have made it easy for UE3 developers around the world to bring their best content to Windows RT, Windows 8, and NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor. Windows RT code is available to licensees from Epic now and we’re excited to see the great games they develop with it.”

In some regards, the Unreal Engine has always been a bit of a step behind Unity when it came to mobile support. For those of you who don't remember, the Unity Engine was used rather frequently for demo and promotional purposes for software running on Nvidia's Tegra 3 processors, including Madfinger Games' Shadowgun and Dead Trigger.

It looks like Epic is ramping up the competitive factors by making the leap to supported Windows 8 platforms as a bit of “Hey guys, we're one step ahead of the competition, please license our engine.”
