At one point Gears of War was headlining every other article...now World of Warcraft has taken its place. Just as the title reads, World of Warcraft’s Burning Crusade by Blizzard Entertainment has broken day-one sells records with an astonishing 2.4 million units sold worldwide, with its simultaneous release in North America, Europe, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia on January 16th, and on January 17th in Australia and New Zealand.

What’s equally amazing is that retailers around the world may run dry of Burning Crusade copies, considering that Blizzard only shipped 4 million copies to over 5,000 retailers worldwide. In just under 24 hours North American gamers had bought 1.2 million copies of WoW’s official expansion pack, and European gamers had already snatched up 1.1 million copies of the expansion.

Within the same time period both continents have a reported 1.7 million users having logged on to play the Burning Crusade. “The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations,” said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We’re pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead.”

With worldwide demand for more copies from retailers, Blizzard’s mega-monolith MMORPG expansion-pack is going to steam-roll right on through the record books. For further information regarding the Burning Crusade or World of Warcraft, be sure to visit the Official World of Warcraft Website.
