The World Ends With You 2 Reveal Next Week?

Fans of the DS RPG The World Ends With You should expect some good news in a few days. Square Enix has launched a countdown teaser site related to the series in some way.

World Ends With You takes place in the Shibuya district of Tokyo. Neku, a newly deceased teenager, is competing in a week-long Game for a shot at being resurrected. If he loses, though, he'll be wiped from existence. As the story progresses, he learns more about the mysterious circumstances of his death.

The countdown site doesn't explicitly mention World but there are abundant hints. The music being played is from the game's soundtrack. The city silhouette shown appears to be Shibuya. Furthermore, the source code for the site mentions that character design was done by Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi, the game's principle artists.

Nomura teased a possible sequel back in April. He stated that he couldn't talk about it at the present time but "there probably is something." Looks like he wasn't just blowing smoke up our ass.

While a sequel announcement seems like the best case scenario, there are other possibilities. Square Enix might be re-releasing the game on a new platform, such as the Vita or mobile phones. It's also possible that they're updating the game with 3D visuals for the 3DS.

The countdown for the timer will expire next Monday, August 27th. Perhaps they'll show something related to the announcement at PAX later that week, too?
