If you haven't tried World of Warcraft's 10th Anniversary events yet, don't worry. They were supposed to end today but Blizzard has announced a last-minute extension.

"The WoW Anniversary event ended a bit earlier than intended, so to make up for that lost time and any inconvenience we’re going to be re-enabling it for an additional week," Blizzard announced on the World of Warcraft forums.

The 10th Anniversary event will be re-launched today at 10 AM PST in North America and 10 AM CET in Europe. It will run until the same time on January 13th.

During the anniversary, level 100 players with a minimum item level of 615 can queue up for a Raid Finder version of Molten Core. This 40-man raid is pretty much the same as it was back in the early days of WoW. You'll fight 10 bosses in the fiery caverns beneath Blackrock Mountain. Fortunately, you won't need Fire Resistance gear this time.

Clearing Molten Core's bosses and trash mobs is a long and frankly tedious process. It was one of the game's earliest raids and hasn't aged well in terms of its appearance or encounter design. However, you'll get some nice rewards for enduring it. Everyone who kills Ragnaros will receive an ilevel 640 helm that's appropriate to their class. It's an easy way to gear up your character for the Highmaul raid and eventually Blackrock Foundry. You'll also get a Core Hound mount to remind you of MC's most annoying trash.

While the best rewards are doled out on your first Ragnaros kill, there are reasons to try it again. You'll have a small chance to earn the rare Hatespark the Tiny battle pet from the boss. He also drops Flames of Ragnaros, an item that gives your weapons a fiery appearance.

The 10th Anniversary also gives players access to Southshore vs Tarren Mill, a Battleground inspired by the world PvP from WoW's early years. Like the random skirmishes that used to break out in Hillsbrad Foothills, Southshore vs Tarren Mill has a simple objective: kill players from the other faction. As you rack up kills, the more points you'll be worth to the other team. The two teams of 40 players will slug it out until one side reaches 300 points.

Southshore vs Tarren Mill is accessible by any characters level 90 or above. There's a separate bracket for level 90-99 characters and level 100 characters so fresh 90's won't be steam-rolled by folks in raid-quality gear. By winning a match, you'll earn the title "Southshore Slayer" for your account's Horde characters and "Tarren Mill Terror" for your Alliance toons. The title will be available for any of your characters that are level 90+, even if you level them past that point after earning the title.

World of Warcraft's anniversaries are usually just marked by a temporary buff and an Achievement but I'm glad Blizzard made the effort to create something more substantial for the game's 10th birthday. It's a great way to show newer players what the game was like in its earlier years and to let veterans relive "the glory days" that many of them pine for. I hope that the 11th anniversary and later celebrations bring other retro-themed activities.
