World of Warcraft may be adding a new Battleground in Patch 5.2. The battleground, entitled "Defense of the Alehouse," appears to be based on the old Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients.
In Defense of the Ancients, two teams of players each try to destroy their opponents' base. Each player, directly controlling a single Hero character, fights off the enemy Heroes as well as A.I. minions. The Hero characters grow stronger as the match proceeds; the XP they earn allows them to level up, while the gold they earn can be used to purchase new equipment. This mod ultimately inspired games like League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth and Dota 2.
It's not clear how this premise would play out in the context of WoW. Are the players the Heroes, tearing through armies of minions on their way to destroy the enemy base? Or are they the minions, attacking or defending super-powerful NPC's or siege weapons that do all the damage to the bases? It's tough to tell from the video, below, which is just footage of the environment.
Patch 5.2 is now open to public testing. If Defense of the Alehouse is going to be included in that patch, Blizzard may open it up for testing soon.
