Ahead of Rian Johnson’s whodunit Knives Out soon coming to the big screen, Hollywood is gearing up to retell a classic murder mystery by Agatha Christie. From the creatives behind 2017 sneaky hit Murder on the Orient Express, comes the next installment: Death on the Nile, one year from now. Director and the franchise’s star Kenneth Branagh has assembled a talented cast. Take a look:
These are some big names! Aside from Kenneth Branagh reprising his role as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, Wonder Woman herself Gal Gadot has officially joined, along with a badass superhero actress on Marvel’s side, Black Panther’s Shuri, Letitia Wright. Call Me By Your Name’s Armie Hammer, Russell Brand and the legendary Annette Bening (recently in Captain Marvel) also round out Death On The Nile’s most well-known stars.
Also coming along on the glamorous Egyptian river steamer is Indian actor Ali Fazal, best known for his leading role alongside Judi Dench in 2017 Oscar-nominated biopic Victoria & Abdul. British actress Sophie Okenedo is best known for her Oscar nominated role in 2004’s Hotel Rwanda with Don Cheadle.
Tom Bateman will be reprising his role of Bouc, Detective Poirot’s right hand man. Emma MacKey from Netflix series Sex Education, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders of BBC’s French & Saunders sketch series and Game of Thrones’ Ygritte actress Rose Leslie complete the announced cast.
The upcoming film from Fox is set to shoot in London and on location in Egypt before heading to theaters next fall. Aside from Kenneth Branagh returning as director, Michael Green is once again pen the screenplay, amidst his other blockbuster screenplays for Logan, Blade Runner 2049 and Alien: Covenant. Death on the Nile also has Alien’s Ridley Scott and X-Men’s Simon Kinberg among its producing team.
Despite mixed reviews, Murder on the Orient Express was a sly box office hit, making over $350 million worldwide over the 2017 holiday season on a reported $55 million production budget. The first Agatha Christie adaptation had Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley, Penélope Cruz, Josh Gad, Johnny Depp, Willem Dafoe, Olivia Colman, Michelle Pfieffer and Judi Dench as a part of its cast. This certainly buffed up moviegoer interest.
When Death on the Nile was first greenlighted, it was originally set for a December 2019 release. When the Disney/Fox merger drew closer, the studio shifted its schedule to make room for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker to dominate the holiday season. The murder mystery will have some competition as it will open one week after Venom 2 and one week before G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes and Halloween Kills.
Death on the Nile comes to theaters on October 9, 2020. Check out what else to expect from the coming new year with our 2020 movie release calendar!
