Miley Cyrus Tops Billboard Chart With New Album Bangerz

Miley Cyrus teased her new album, Bangerz, for months before it actually drooped on October 4. In its first full week of sales, Bangerz has been a major success, topping the Billboard 200 album chart in its first week. That’s a feat in a week with seven album debuts, including music from Panic! At The Disco and Pusha T.

While Bangerz didn’t crush as much in its first week at bat as a few of 2013’s other big outings, including both of Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience records and Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail. However, the album did quite well, selling 270,000 copies in its first week. That’s the first #1 album Cyrus has had since 2008, when Breakout also topped the charts.

According to Billboard, Panic! At The Disco also had a big week, selling 84,000 albums with the group’s latest outing, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die, named after a Hunter S. Thompson line. The last time that band had an album that charted high was in 2008 with Pretty. Odd, which landed at #2 in the charts. Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die also landed at #2 this week. This week is also notable for its #9 entry, which is where The Voice winner Cassadee Pope’s debut album landed. She’s the first The Voice winner to land in the charts in the top 10 and the second to land on the charts at all. It could mean that The Voice has the possibility to create profitable stars, after all.

Cyrus’ success with Bangerz has no doubt been helped by the 20-year-old singer’s push to stay in the limelight since the release of her first single from the album, “We Can’t Stop.” From twerking with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards to having fights with Sinead O’Connor, the young singer has been a major pop culture talking point over the last few months for anyone with Internet access. The more a person is in the limelight, the easier it is to continually promote a new album, and that seems to be what Cyrus has accomplished with Bangerz.

We’ll see if Cyrus can manage to land high on the charts next week. It’s extremely difficult to land the #1 slot on the Billboard 200 Album Charts two weeks in a roll, but expect the album to keep selling well.
