Samuel L. Jackson is reportedly set to star in a new MCU series that is developing at Disney+, according to Variety, with Marvel Studios producing and Mr. Robot writer and executive producer Kyle Bradstreet on board to write and executive produce. Although details are scarce at the moment, this would be the latest of many MCU series in the works as Disney+.
The actor made his debut as Nick Fury all the way back in the beginning of the MCU with a post-credits sequence in Iron Man in 2008, and he has gone on to reprise his role another ten times on the big screen, despite an apparent death early in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Samuel L. Jackson also appeared on live-action TV as Nick Fury on two occasions back in the first season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC.
His first S.H.I.E.L.D. appearance amounted to little more than a cameo, but his second was pivotal to the end of the Winter Soldier-adjacent first season and proved that Nick Fury can definitely work on the small screen as well as film. Samuel L. Jackson's most recent MCU appearance came at the end of Spider-Man: Far from Home, in a shocking post-credits sequence.
A big question is when in the MCU timeline this prospective Nick Fury series will be set. Samuel L. Jackson has played Fury at different points, ranging from the present from Iron Man onward to a dip back into the 1990s for Captain Marvel. If the show picks up after the Far From Home post-credits sequence, then some very big developments in the MCU may happen on television as opposed to film, as MCU fans might have expected after seeing Fury's return.
Although the project is apparently still developing, an MCU series with such a huge star attached seems bound to become a priority at Disney+. Assuming the Fury show does indeed happen, it will join the likes of WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki in featuring the stars from the MCU films reprising their roles for Disney+.
Other MCU series in the works at the streamer include She-Hulk (which recently cast its leading lady and raised hopes for a Mark Ruffalo appearance), Ms. Marvel (which recently made big news of its own), Hawkeye, and Moon Knight. While the future of the MCU on the big screen is uncertain thanks to Black Widow and Eternals facing major delays, among others, more Marvel content is on the way to Disney+.
The Nick Fury series is likely a while off, but WandaVision is expected to debut on Disney+ before the end of 2020, and the trailer for the series promises some wild developments are in store. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally intended for a 2020 release and completed a significant portion of production before the shutdowns, and Loki is back in production, so hopefully those two series will be ready for streaming by mid-2021.
