Akaneiro: Demon Hunters Goes Into Closed Beta
Spicy Horse Games, the folks behind such titles as Crazy Fairies, American McGee's Grimm and Alice: Madness Returns have been cooking up something special in their latest offering, Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, a free-to-play action MMO that has officially entered into closed beta.
Akaneiro is a pretty bizarre concoction. Basically, this game is what you would get if you took the story of Little Red Riding Hood, set it in Edo-era Japan, gave it gameplay similar to a more action-heavy Diablo, art that's reminiscent of Okami, and wrapped it all in an MMO experience where players can team up to take on monsters inspired by folklore and myth. In case that was too obtuse in the written form, here's a look at the game in a more visual medium.
The last thing I need is another great free-to-play MMO to steal away all of my free time, and Akaneiro: Demon Hunters certainly feels like the kind of game that could cause me to relapse. It offers loads of missions, enemies and locations, thousands of items, tons of spells and weapon abilities, co-op and more. I already feel the f2p twitches coming on.
Spicy Horse recently sent Akaneiro into a closed beta, inviting 1,000 players to test the servers and content. Once the team is comfortable with how the game is running, they will invite in another 5,000 players to keep the testing going. More waves will be invited in until the game hits its open beta stage sometime next year.
