Diablo 3 debuted on PC and Mac exactly three years ago. Blizzard is commemorating the game's birthday by introducing a cow level to the game for a limited time.

The developer announced the level's release with a pun-laden post on their website:
We've recently herd rumors of an invasion. Not one of a demonic nature, mind you, for those we are quite accustomed to. No, these rumors allege that townships throughout Khanduras are being overrun by bipedal, bardiche-bearing bovine who are luring weary adventurers to the proverbial slaughter through moosterious orange portals.

Many of you have expressed fear. Some have asked if you should moov your families. To this we say: Hold fast. There is no cause for alarm. We've seen the so-called "evidence" being pastured around local inns and, after thoroughly investigating all reported sightings, can cowfindently state that this is nothing more than a clever hoax.

Starting today, players can find cow goblins out in the wilderness. When they kill one, a portal will open up to a new area called "Not the Cow Level." Here you'll be able to fight hordes of bipedal cows:

This level will be accessible on PC, Mac, Xbox One and PS4. If you own the PS3 or Xbox 360 version of the Ultimate Evil Edition, you won't be able to access the cow level. You will, however, receive temporary buffs.

"Double your adventuring profits! For a limited time, enjoy a +100% bonus to EXP and Gold!" Blizzard said on their forums. "This bonus will stack with other existing bonuses in the game including (but not limited to) those provided by items, shrines, and Pools of Reflection."

The buffs and cow level will be available from now until Thursday, May 21, at 11:59 p.m. PDT.

The cow level has been a long-running joke for Blizzard. Diablo 2 let players fight Hell Bovines and their Cow King. Entering the code "there is no cow level" in StarCraft let you skip your current mission. World of Warcraft, contained numerous references to the level including an armor piece called Cow King's Hide.

This isn't the first Easter egg level to be added to Diablo 3. Whimsyshire, a land filled with unicorns and happy clouds, has been accessible since launch. The game's Adventure Mode also has a rare dungeon filled with bovines from Hell.
