Blizzard decided to participate in the gaming trailer orgy at the Spike VGAs. They unveiled the opening cinematic for Diablo III, the long-awaited action RPG arriving early next year.

In the video, Deckard Cain and his niece Leah are doing research in an old church. Deckard believes that the forces of Hell are about to mount an attack on the world. His suspicions are proven right when the church is suddenly bombarded with a rain of fire.

We're led to believe that Deckard actually dies in this scene. We never actually see a body, though. We probably haven't seen the last of him. Either way, I guess Leah will be his stand-in during the campaign and offer advice and guidance to players.

I was hoping Blizzard would sneak a release date into the end of the trailer but alas. That bit of news eludes us once again.
