What's Going On With Red Skull Heading Into Avengers 4

Red Skull in Avengers 4

There were a lot of awesome moments in Avengers: Infinity War, but one of the most shocking moments by far (excluding that ending) was the return of Red Skull. While plenty of fans certainly theorized or hoped for his return, to actually see him back on the big screen was a jaw-dropping shock. And as a wraith-like guardian of the Soul Stone no less! It was cool, but it leads to the question of if this was finally it for Red Skull. As it turns out, there might be more for Red Skull, as Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that he is now free to leave Vormir. Here's what the Russo brothers had to say on the topic:

Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo teamed up with Vudu for a Vudu Viewing Party, in which fans could tweet in their questions about the movie to the duo and have a chance to win some swag. The directors have dropped some interesting tidbits about their massive blockbuster recently and it was only a matter of time before someone brought up Red Skull. One fan asked about Red Skull's fate now that the Soul Stone has been taken by Thanos. The answer did not disappoint.

For those who may need a refresher, after the events in Captain America: The First Avenger, Red Skull was transported to the planet Vormir where he was sentenced to become the protector of the Soul Stone and guiding those seeking to claim it. Courtesy of the Avengers Twitter, now that Thanos has taken the stone off-world, Red Skull's cosmic prison has been unlocked and he's now free to do what he chooses. They also added the very interesting comment that he can also go after an Infinity Stone if he wants.

This is definitely good news for Marvel who have been wanting to see more of Red Skull over the years. His Infinity War reveal was a real crowd-pleaser (the Marvel fans in my packed screening audibly gasped) and now there's a tease that there could mean we see more of him. It's especially interesting to me that the Russo's added the Infinity Stone bit. Does this mean that Red Skull is going to make a move in Avengers 4? If anything, the Russo's might just be leaving the door open for someone to do something with Red Skull in the future, but for a character who people thought they'd never see again, this is exciting stuff.

The future for Red Skull is unclear but Marvel has its own laid out with some handy release dates. Set your calendars for May 3, 2019, for Avengers 4. To find out more about the movie, here's everything we know so far about the blockbuster.
