One Chicago is already one of the biggest and most cohesive shared universes on network television, and now the NBC shows are bringing in new characters and back some familiar faces. Even though One Chicago hasn't been able to deliver the kinds of crossovers between Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med that fans are used to in the 2020-2021 season, the shows are still getting bigger thanks to these cast additions. Read on for who's coming in and who's coming back, starting with the original One Chicago series!
Chicago Fire recently said goodbye to Adriyan Rae's Gianna Mackey as the latest in a long line of paramedics to depart the series, and not too long after making her Fire debut in early Season 9. Deadline reports that Fire is bringing back a familiar face in Hanako Greensmith's Violet Lim in a recurring role, presumably to take the open slot as Brett's paramedic partner at Firehouse 51 and perhaps reignite the romance with Gallo. Mackie could still appear at some point, but the Fire future looks like Violet.
Chicago P.D. is also bringing back a familiar face in the form of Jack Coleman, a.k.a. Bob Ruzek. He is returning as a guest star to play Ruzek's dad, so fans shouldn't expect him back on a regular basis. In fact, based on the description for the upcoming "The Radical Truth" episode of P.D. on March 31, the newly-expanded Intelligence Unit will have to race to find Bob before it's too late when he goes missing. If they don't find him in time, could this be Coleman's last appearance as Ruzek's father? Ruzek has been having a rough enough season already!
Chicago Med is the One Chicago show that's significantly adding some characters with a return and multiple new castings. Returning will be Margaret Colin of Veep and Gossip Girl fame to recur as Natalie's mother Carol, which may mean that her health problems weren't cleared up with surgery in a recent episode despite Natalie and Crockett's hopes. And could it mean Med revisiting Manstead again? Med is also adding two new actors as guest stars.
On the guest-starring front, Chicago Med viewers can expect American Horror Story veteran Charlie Farrell and Neighborhood Buzz's Benny Mora. Farrell will play Mark Barragan and play a part in Will's story as the executive in charge of the heart failure drug trial, on which Will has only worked with April and Dr. Virani so far. Mora will play a 30-something blue-collar truck driver by the name of Mike, who comes to Med when his ex-wife brings their baby into the ED.
All of these new and returning One Chicago actors will appear in the current seasons, which means Chicago Fire Season 9 (which may or may not be setting Casey up to say goodbye), Chicago P.D. Season 8 (which has been especially complicated for Atwater with the latest case getting personal), and Chicago Med Season 6.
All three shows are taking next week off but will be back with new episodes on NBC starting with Med at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 31, followed by Fire at 9 p.m. and P.D. at 10 p.m. One Chicago returns just a day before Law & Order: SVU launches Law & Order: Organized Crime on April 1 as the next installment in the Dick Wolf universe, so be sure to tune in!
