Few people know this about wizards, but they are actually a rather rambunctious bunch, always getting into tiffs and flinging spells at one another. According to Paradox Interactive and Paradox North, gamers will soon be able to experience this sort of behavior for themselves as Magicka: Wizard Wars gears up for open beta.
For those unfamiliar with Magicka, it's a rather nifty 2.5D top-down dungeon crawler of sorts that sees players teaming up with fellow wizards, exploring exotic locales and combining spells to wipe out loads of baddies. Spell combination is actually the big draw of the game, as players learn to utilize different mixtures of element-based conjurations in order to discover more and more powerful abilities. Some heal, most hurt and, yes, you can absolutely set your “teammates” on fire by accident.
Last year, Paradox Interactive announced that the series would be branching out into new territory, specifically competitive multiplayer. The regular Magicaka game had already enjoyed a couple of expansions, including one that sent the mages to, no joke, Vietnam, but one thing remained evident no matter what version of the game people were playing: They liked flinging spells at one another about as much as working together to take out the hordes of enemies.
So why not just cut to the chase, Paradox thought, and now we're staring down the barrel of Magicka: Wizard Wars, a game that's all about making life as difficult as possible for the other players. Currently available through Steam Early Access, Paradox Interactive has now announced that an open beta for the game will begin on May 27, allowing everyone to try it out for free.
“Magicka: Wizard Wars will be playable for free by those who demonstrate a lack of self-preservation instinct when the title enters its open beta phase,” reads a press release from the publisher. “Robe enthusiasts everywhere still have the chance to experience the friendly-firing frenzy of Magicka: Wizard Wars as it draws nearer to launch and test whether their friendships can withstand repeated spellcasting 'incidents' by purchasing the title on Early Access and, in the process, nabbing exclusive goodies.”
This new version of the game will pit two teams of four players against one another in a PvP struggle to determine which...What do you call a group of wizards? A flock? Fine...a PvP struggle to determine which flock is superior.
“Players can also hone their skills against one another in the one-on-one duel mode, utilizing all of their tricks in order to be the last robe standing,” continues the official announcement. “With short battles, skill-based spellcasting and plenty of humor, Magicka: Wizard Wars presents a new way to experience the chaos of Magicka with friends and foes alike.”
To get it now on Early Access, head on over to Steam. Otherwise, sit tight and enjoy it in open beta come May 27.
