The gospel singing legend Aretha Franklin is an obvious pick for the biopic treatment, and the singer herself has been working on putting one together at least since 2007, when she announced at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony that she wanted Jennifer Hudson to play her in the film. Four years and presumably a lot of changes later, Franklin is still at work on putting the biopic together, but she's changed her mind about who ought to play her and has added a few more names to the dream casting list.

Sticking with her penchant for announcing news in unexpected places, Franklin made a call to Wendy Williams's radio show (via THR) and announced that "Halle Berry is my pick for the older Aretha. There's a young Aretha that has yet to be named." She also said she wanted Denzel Washington to play her father and Terrence Howard to play Smokey Robinson, though it's unclear if either acorn is even aware they're on the shortlist. ANd Berry, for her part, told Ryan Seacrest at the Golden Globes that "Someone should tell Aretha that I can't do her justice."

Even though she's been planning the project for years now, Franklin says the pieces are finally falling into place for it to actually happen: "For the last four years, we've been talking about that and I have had a number of offers but unfortunately, they were not good offers. Now, we have something on the table. They have all of the financing on one project and the second project, he's in the process of writing things for me to approve on the tele-film." But who will actually wind up starring in the film? That seems to be more up for debate than the singing legend believes.
