Scrubs' Actors Gave Me Their Take On The Show's Latest Romance Already Hitting A Snag

Warning: SPOILERS for the Scrubs episode “My Best Friend’s Barbecue” are ahead!

We’re seven episodes into the Scrubs revival’s run on the 2026 TV schedule, and the show’s latest romance has already hit a snag. Last week, Jacob Dudman’s Asher and Layla Mohammadi’s Layla finally acted on their romantic interest in one another and had sex in one of the on-call rooms. Well, after the events of “My Best Friend’s Barbecue,” we may not actually see them become an official couple, and CinemaBlend got Dudman and Mohammadi’s takes on this development.

The newest Scrubs episode saw Asher and Amara taking every opportunity they had at Sacred Heart to hook up, but it turns out they wanted different things from these moments. While Asher was all-in on being in a relationship, Amara, riding high off doing something so wild for the first time in her life, wanted to keep their hookups casual and without any labels. I asked Jacob Dudman and Layla Mohammadi where things go from here now that these differing perspectives have been established, and the latter started off by telling me:

I think Amara is still figuring out what she is doing. I think this is the first time anyone's seen her in this light, and she's in this new, exciting, crazy phase and doesn't know really what she wants. I think she just wants to have fun and hopefully Asher is not in the crossfire.

Layla has lived quite the sheltered life up to this point, so it makes sense why the hookups with Asher would kickstart her desire to try to do more “exciting” and “crazy” things. She even listed immediate examples that came to mind while speaking with Amanda Morrow’s Dashana Trainor. There wasn’t any time in “ My Best Friend’s Barbecue” for her to try at least one of them, but the episode did end with Amara deciding to move out of her aunt and uncle’s house and live with Dashana, as their friendship has blossomed over the last few weeks.

Then on the other side, there’s Asher, who was clearly sad that Amara was interested in them becoming boyfriend and girlfriend. When I pointed out how disappointed the character looked to Jacob Dudman, he responded:

He did a little bit, didn't he? I think, maybe similar to what Layla was saying, similar to Amara, he’s in a new position in that he can't understand why someone would want something so loose when clearly there's affection there. So maybe that's his sort of black and white world, and you know, Amara's trying all the colors of the rainbow.

I should note that there’s precedence on Scrubs for what initially looks like a promising romantic relationship going sideways quickly. The first time that J.D. and Elliot slept together in the original show’s first season, they were already broken up in the next episode, though that took place across several weeks. Then the next two times they got together in the following two seasons, things collapsed just about as quickly. It seemed like J.D. and Elliot were finally going to stay together for good in Season 8, but then it was revealed in the revival’s premiere that they were divorced.

It’s left ambiguous at the end of “My Best Friend’s Barbecue” about whether Asher and Amara will keep hooking up, as the former is clearly not on board with this casualness as the latter is. There’s only two more episodes left in the season to explore this, which makes me all the more hopeful that ABC greenlights another season of Scrubs. You can also stream the revival and the original show with a Hulu subscription.
