Netflix’s The Baby-sitters Club Series Is Actually Happening And Cast A ‘90s Icon
The ‘90s are back in a big way and I’m not just talking about the scrunchies and slip dress. I am, in fact, talking about The Baby-sitters Club, a new Netflix series based on the popular series written by Ann M. Martin. Now, casting has begun and yes, ‘90s icon Alicia Silverstone is involved.
Back in the youths of many millennials, paperback copies of The Baby-sitters Club were everywhere, from libraries to homes. They introduced us to Claudia and her secret candy stash, club president Kristy, shy Mary Anne, stepsister Dawn and fashionable former New Yorker Stacey. The books were so popular we even got a movie back in 1995 starring Evan Rachel Leigh and Schuler Fisk.
Who Alicia Silverstone Playing In The Baby-sitters Club?
Netflix is taking on the upcoming project and the new series will head back to Stonybrook, Connecticut to reintroduce these characters to a new generation of fans. Alicia Silverstone, who grew up on the big screen in the 1990s in titles like Clueless and The Babysitter, will star in the new series as Kristy’s mom, Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer.
The move to a Netflix series shouldn’t come as a big shock, as Alicia Silverstone has been on TV fairly regularly in recent years. She headlined American Woman on Paramount Network, for example, and had a notable run on ABC’s Suburgatory, reuniting with her Clueless co-star Jeremy Sisto, a few years back.
Who Is Mark Feuerstein Playing In The Baby-sitters Club?
Joining her for The Baby-sitters Club will be Mark Feuerstein, who will be playing her on-screen partner Watson Brewer. Feuerstein is coming off a few TV runs himself on 9JKL, Netlfix’s Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later revival and the return of Prison Break. Before that, he was the star on Royal Pains, a series which wrapped after its eighth season on USA.
Netflix has tied into nostalgia with some of its releases, but The Baby-sitters Club books are very much intended for a younger generation, so it will be interesting to see how this narrative will be changed for a more modern audience using the subscription streaming service.
So far we know Ann M. Martin will produce alongside executive producers, Walden Media, Michael De Luca, Lucy Kitada and Naia Cucukov. Rachel Shukert will be the showrunner and Lucia Aniello has been signed on as a director and executive producer.

The project is already coming together rapidly and is filming in Vancouver with 10 episodes expected for Season 1. A previous announcement about the series indicated the new project will look at topics facing teens today as well as topics that were touched on in the original book series. But we’ll know more as casting continues and we get a first look at the upcoming project.
