What’s Going On With Julie And The Phantoms Season 2?

In September 2020, Netflix subscribers watched in amazement as the hit musical dramedy Julie and the Phantoms and its talented and versatile cast provided some of the best stories, moments, and catchy pop songs the likes of which hadn’t been seen in some time. And while it seems like Madison Reyes’ Julie Molina, Charlie Gillespie’s Luke, and the rest of the enchanted pop-rock group will be back at some time to pick up where things left off, the show’s fans are left wondering: what’s going on with Julie and the Phantoms Season 2?

So, what is going on with the Netflix show’s sophomore season? Even months after the Julie and the Phantoms Season 1 came to an end after nine wholesome and entertaining episodes, there hasn’t been a peep from the streamer about the show’s highly anticipated second effort. Below is a breakdown of comments that have been made about Season 2 from the cast and crew, as well as what Netflix has been doing to keep from letting fans forget all those catchy tunes. Let’s get started…

Julie And The Phantoms Season 2 Has Been Rumored But Not Yet Made Official

Ever since fans blew through the first set of nine episodes of Julie and the Phantoms in September 2020, they have been wondering when they will be able to pick back up with the talented singer and her backing band of specter musicians will be returning to the stage (and screen). There have been plenty of rumors floating around the great beyond in recent months, but Netflix has remained mum on the whole situation.

With not so much as a peep from the OG streaming service, fans are left scrambling to figure out just when Julie and the Phantoms Season 2 will premiere. And considering what Netflix did with the arrival of Cobra Kai Season 3 ahead of the show’s January 1, 2021 release (originally set for January 8 before being listed as “Coming in January), the show could randomly appear out of nowhere as far as anyone knows.

One Of The Show’s Producers Thinks Season 2 Could Be Better Than The First

It is safe to say Julie and the Phantoms caught everyone by surprise. From Netflix to the show’s producers to the fans who obsessively watched and took in the show’s songs and heartfelt messages about love, diversity, and finding one’s place, Season 1 was undoubtedly a major success. But one of the show’s producers, Shawn Williamson, told CinemaBlend in November 2020 that there are more places for the show to go and be even better if Season 2 happens. When asked if there were new places to go, Williamson stated:

I believe so, yes. Absolutely. So they’ve certainly set them up well for success on the next season. And Dan [Cross] and Dave [Hoge] as the showrunners were spectacular. And I know that the second season would be as good or better than the first.

This doesn’t so much as confirm the renewal of Julie and the Phantoms for a second season, but Shawn Williamson’s comments about the show’s future and its quality have to leave fans more than a little excited as we await more information.

Cheyenne Jackson on Julie and the Phantoms

Cheyenne Jackson Hopes Season 2 Will Explain Caleb Covington’s Obsession With Sunset Curve

Cheyenne Jackson’s Caleb Covington, the famous ghost who owns and operates the Hollywood Ghost Club in Julie and the Phantoms Season 1, is excited to see where the show takes his character in the future, especially after he possessed Nick (Sacha Carlson) in the final moments of the finale. During a September 2020 interview with ET, the Call Me Kat star had this to say about the idea of figuring out how the story will expand moving forward:

I think that’s going to be the fun thing, if Season 2 does happen, is the backstory and what is his obsession with this band. Why this band? Does he have a specific thing with one of them or all three? Those are the fun questions I hope we get to answer. He must have a personal connection with one of them. I just can’t figure out any other reason why he would be so resigned to it’s all about Sunset Curve.

Considering the way things ended for Caleb, Nick, Julie, and the rest of the cast of Julie and the Phantoms there’s a strong chance those questions and others will be resolved whenever the show makes its eventual return to Netflix.

Kenny Ortega Would Like To See The Connection Between Julie And Luke Grow In Season 2

One of the things Kenny Ortega, the executive producer and director of five episodes of Julie and the Phantoms Season 1 (as well as the original Hocus Pocus), is most excited to explore in the show’s second season is the relationship shared by Julie and Luke in terms of songwriting and becoming one another’s love interesest. In the same ET interview mentioned above, Ortega said the connection between the pair will probably grow in a much bigger capacity if the show returns for Season 2 as fans watch as their love of songwriting and performing brings them closer than ever before.

There Are Multiple Directions Julie And The Phantoms Could Take Following The Show’s First Season

In addition to the story angles mentioned by Cheyenne Jackson and Kenny Ortega, there are plenty of other directions Julie and the Phantoms could take moving forward. With everything from Luke, Alex, and Reggie having to get to the bottom of their “Unfinished Business” to Julie’s “Hologram Projector” to how the characters’ past will affect their respective futures, there’s going to be a lot to unpack. CinemaBlend previously asked about the lingering questions from the Season 1 finale and what they mean for the show’s future.
