Kevin Smith Isn't Done With The Flash Yet, Here's What's Happening

Directors of TV episodes don’t always get the kind of attention they deserve, but that hasn’t been the case at all with next week’s Flash episode, which has been making headlines for having Kevin Smith behind the camera. Both Smith and the Flash camp have been overwhelmingly positive about the entire ordeal, and the show is putting its money back where its mouth is by already confirming that Smith will be returning to direct another episode of the superhero drama in Season 3.

The Flash is currently on hiatus until July, and when August rolls around, Kevin Smith will return to the director’s chair for another round of fun and danger in Central City. According to ComicBook, the episode will come during the first half of Season 3, which should put it airing either at the end of September or October. Two Flash episodes in five months will be a killer highlight on Smith’s increasingly stocked resume.

It wasn’t much of a surprise to hear that The Flash was getting a third season, given how popular the show has been for The CW, and it’s equally non-shocking to hear that Smith was welcomed back to the show, and that he figured out a way to make it work with his schedule. There have seriously been a lot of good vibrations flowing off of the episode’s filming, with Smith calling it his favorite directorial effort and the show’s cast and crew praising Smith’s affability on the set and affection for the subject matter. (Spoilers for the most recent episode, “Rupture,” are below.)

We obviously have no idea what Smith’s Season 3 episode is going to be about, since we still don’t know so much about the rest of this current season, but we now have a better idea of what to expect from his initial journey into The Flash’s story. In “Rupture,” Harry’s particle accelerator explosion recreation goes sideways, and Barry disappears. The promo for Smith’s “The Runaway Dinosaur” revealed that the S.T.A.R. Labs team will be trying to track down Barry, who has apparently been transported into some weird part of the universe where Joe isn’t Joe and he can’t escape. You can check out a preview for it below.

As well, the Barry-less group will have to deal with the return of Girder, with Iris taking on a bigger role within Team Flash in capturing the villain. The episode will also feature a reference to one of Kevin Smith’s movies, which may or may not have something to do with Jason Mewes’ double cameo as both a human and a metahuman.

The Flash airs Tuesdays on The CW.
