Spoilers for Bridgerton Season 4 are ahead! Read with caution, and stream the series with a Netflix subscription.
Well, Bridgerton certainly ended its run on Netflix’s 2026 schedule with a bang. Between John’s death and Sophie and Benedict navigating their love and the class divide, the characters really were put through major challenges this season. However, arguably, the biggest reveal of the season came when everyone found out that a new person had taken over the Lady Whistledown mantel. So, obviously, I asked the showrunner about this new mystery.
In Season 4 of Bridgerton, Penelope is out as Lady Whistledown, and she struggles with maintaining that mantle. So, by the end, she decides to put down her quill. However, right as the season comes to a close, a new Whistledown comes into the spotlight. Now, we really don’t know who is keeping the ton informed on all the latest gossip, so when I interviewed showrunner Jess Brownell, I had to ask about this new mystery. In response, she threw it back to Penelope and Colin’s season, telling me:
Let me take you all the way back to Season 3. Shonda [Rhimes] and I had a conversation about [how] we knew Penelope was going to come forward as Whistledown. I think her stepping into her power – it's in the book, and it only felt right for her to do that in her season. But once she became a public Whistledown, there's only so much story that can be had from that, because the stakes are a lot lower. There's no secret being kept.
She’s right. Whistledown was not nearly as powerful this season as she has been in the past, and Penelope even addresses that with the queen on the show. Overall, she’s simply done with that chapter of her life, and she came to that conclusion after “wrestling with how to deal with people knowing [she’s] writing about [them],” as Brownell put it.
So, it was time for Penelope to retire as Whistledown, to be blunt. However, it was not time to fully retire the gossip columnist; in fact, it was time to revamp her, as the showrunner told me:
But ultimately, we didn't want to squander the voice of Julie Andrews. And I think, Whistledown is such a useful device, narratively, thematically, and in terms of the conflict in the show. So now we have a genuine mystery about who Whistledown is, because it's not from the books.
As Brownell noted, this book-to-screen adaptation is really going away from its source material with this plotpoint, because in Julia Quinn’s novels, Penelope is the only Whistledown. So, for every single fan of Bridgerton, there’s a new mystery for us all to look forward to.
With that in mind, I asked the showrunner if this new gossip girl would be a friend or foe to the Bridgerton family. In response, she said:

The Bridgertons are good gossip, and any Whistledown worth their salt is going to know that they're going to have to go after the Bridgertons. And I would say we wouldn't create a new Whistledown if she wasn't worth her salt.
Well, consider me intrigued! Personally, I cannot wait to watch Seasons 5 and 6 of Bridgerton with this new mystery on my mind. Whether this new voice is supportive or critical of the titular family, I’m sure she’ll have something wild to say that will rile up the ton, and I cannot wait to see it all.
Plus, while we wait, we can theorize about who the Lady Whistledown is, because if there’s one thing this writer loves, it’s a dash of mystery with my romance.
