Why 90 Day Fiance's Armando Is Nervous About Being Part Of The Franchise's First Male Gay Couple

Armando 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way TLC

Warning! The following contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way. Read at your own risk!

With 90 Day Fiancé: Before The 90 Days Season 4 over and done with, it's time for TLC to welcome back its flip-flopped spinoff 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, which follows Americans who leave the country to live with their loved ones abroad, and documents all the trials and tribulations that come with that. Season 2 is already noteworthy for featuring the franchise's first same-sex male couple in Kenneth Niedermeier and Armando.

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way picks up as the U.S.-born Kenneth moves in with Armando and his young daughter in Mexico, an event that Armando was somewhat nervous to see broadcasted. Armando spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the upcoming season and his reservations about appearing on TLC as a gay man.

I'm a little nervous, personally, not knowing what to expect. I'm recently coming out so, you know, putting it out to the world is a big step for me.

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way's Season 2 got into Armando's story in a way that makes his apprehension about appearing on the reality show all the more understandable. Armando originally came out to his first wife and family, who immediately rejected him after the announcement. A few months after Armando and his then-wife separated, she died in a car accident. Armando continued to raise his daughter, all the while stifling conversations about his sexuality in order to remain close with his family.

Armando confronted his sister in the 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way premiere about that past rejection, and he ultimately gained her acceptance for being so honest about himself. She was less thrilled about her brother moving four hours away, though, saying he had been a "second father" to her children in recent years. Armando still had yet to talk to his parents about his sexuality and moving away at the episode's end, so it remains to be seen how they'll react to the news of him living with Kenneth. So with that nervousness already in play, Armando also has to worry about how the rest of the world will react after the episode.

Armando's larger discussion with his family about his sexuality is a deeply personal moment, especially given all he's been through, so he gets credit for letting 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way roll forward with his story despite any reservations he had about doing the series. Okay, so he did first tell his parents that he was part of a documentary in order to get them involved, but still.

When speaking about the decision to be part of the 90 Day Fiance world, Kenneth explained that part of getting up close and personal is to demystify and highlight the differences and similarities between gay couples and heterosexual couples. Speaking about the break-up of the franchise's first lesbian couple, Stephanie and Erika, Kennthe said:

What a lot of the times people don't realize is same sex couples have the same problems as everybody else. They have the ups and downs -- some make it, some don't...It's amazing to show people that two men can love each other and have a great life together.

The 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way couple is bound to have some drama this season, as Kenneth adjusts to life in Mexico away from his children and grandchildren back in America. Tension is likely going to hit home soon from this adjustment, but as the couple said, it probably won't be so different than it would be for any other couple.

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way airs on TLC Mondays at 9:00 p.m. ET. Continue to stick with CinemaBlend for more updates on the franchise, and for the latest news happening in the world of television and movies.
