Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Has Been Renewed For Season 3

Netflix has been producing fantastic original series in recent years, and one of the funniest has definitely been Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Coming from the minds of comic writer extraordinaires Tina Fey and Robert Carlock and starring Ellie Kemper of The Office fame, we can always expect plenty of laughs from the show. Luckily, it looks like Kimmy Schmidt really is unbreakable, and we’ll now be able to expect the laughs to continue for even longer. Netflix has officially renewed Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for Season 3.

The order for Season 3 comes before Season 2 has even been released on Netflix, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter taken from the streaming service’s panel at the TCA winter press tour. It’ll be a whole lot easier to enjoy a marathon watch of Season 2 on Netflix with the knowledge that there will still be more to come.

The renewal for Season 3 is actually the first time that the renewal question has arisen for Kimmy Schmidt. Netflix originally rescued the comedy from receiving a preemptive axe from NBC and ordered Tina Fey’s comedy for two seasons. We knew we had a Season 2 coming no matter what; Neflix ordering even more Kimmy before the viewing numbers for Season 2 are available is a great show of faith in Fey, Kemper, and Co.

Of course, Kimmy Schmidt has not been a success thanks only to Fey and Kemper. Although the premise of the series follows a young woman who escaped the underground bunker of a doomsday cult and set out for a new start in New York City, Kimmy quickly surrounded herself with such a quirky cast of supporting characters that it’s almost difficult to pick a favorite. Tituss Burgess as Kimmy’s roommate and friend Titus Andromedon has been a breakout hit, and Jane Krakowski of 30 Rock fame playing socialite Jacqueline Voorhees, who hires Kimmy to be her nanny, was a perfect casting choice.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a highlight of the roster of Netflix originals, but it’s certainly not the only killer comedy. Even if we hadn’t gotten news of the Kimmy renewal as early as we have, we could have passed the time waiting with series like the recent Critics Choice Award winner Master of None, Grace and Frankie, and BoJack Horseman.

There’s no set date just yet for when we can expect Season 3 to hit the web, so we may need to queue up some of those comedies anyway. Fortunately, we don’t have too much longer to wait for our next serving of Kimmy. Season 2 premieres on Netflix on Friday, April 15 at 12:01 a.m. PT.
