Van Wilder: Freshman Year Take II

Was Van Wilder: Freshman Year not raunchy enough for you? Well, you’re in luck because on July 14th Paramount Home Entertainment will release Van Wilder: Freshman Year: Unrated on DVD.

We saw Van rule the school and even saw his trusty assistant Taj take the throne. Now it’s time to travel back to when Van (Jonathan Bennett) first stepped foot on the campus of Coolidge College. Thanks to a super strict dean (Kurt Fuller), Coolidge wasn’t much fun, but Van makes it his top priority to break all the rules and make school a party heaven.

I don’t understand the practice of releasing an unrated version of a film, months after the theatrical version has already hit DVD. Anyone who enjoyed the movie enough to want to own it, probably purchased a copy already. If you already own a movie, why would you buy a second copy? Maybe buying the director’s cut of a good film would make sense if it adds a significant amount of material to the original version, but I doubt this unrated edition will bring you much more than some extra nudity and vulgarity. Other than that, the only other difference between this disc and the one released on March 17th is that it includes commentary with Director Harv Glazer and the cast, “Van’s Party Supplies” and “Pranks 101.”

If that makes the $29.99 worth spending, you’ll also get the bonus material from the original DVD release which includes, “Creating the Legend: The Making of Van Wilder: Freshman Year,” “Going Balls Out: Colossus,” “Coolidge College: Orientation Video, “Decatur,” “Teacher’s Pets,” and bloopers.
