The Weekend Blend 2/4 – 2/6

2/4 – 2/6 New movies come out each weekend; come here to find out which romantic comedy you’ll be forcibly attending with someone you love or at least sort of care about. Two new releases hitting wide this weekend, neither all that appealing. If I looked, I could probably find an expanding indie like Hotel Rwanda, but I need a break. You’ll have to make due with one of these legitimately new releases:

BOOGEYMAN (opens 2/4) Are there always this many horror movies in theaters at the beginning of the year? It’s like we’re having a second Halloween. Boogeyman has Sam Raimi stink on it, so you might think it worth your time. Maybe it is. But Sam’s name isn’t what it used to be in the horror genre. The man is busy doing more important things like Spider-Man 3. I doubt he’s really taken the time to make sure Boogeyman lives up to his seal of approval. Horror snobs are already lining up to hate it. I’m not a horror snob, more of a horror hater… but I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and say that it’s probably better than Alone in the Dark. This means that it is without a doubt not the worst horror film of the year. If you insist on seeing it, comfort yourself with that little nugget.

THE WEDDING DATE (opens 2/4) This is Debra Messing’s cash in flick before Will and Grace goes off the air and we all go back to remembering her as that chick from “Ned and Stacey”. Her male co-star from that show may end up with an Oscar, Debra will be lucky to bring pleasure to a few starry-eyed house frous for one weekend before her career is over. The Wedding Date is sort of a Pretty Woman in reverse, with Messing hiring a male escort to play boyfriend for her on a wedding weekend with the family. Because as we all know, no woman is complete without a man. Right? Stop with the career thing ladies, get barefoot and pregnant. But, no matter how bad it is, there’s one compelling reason to see Wedding Date: because your woman wants to. It’s not as if you have any choice in the matter and it’s not like there’s anything better in theaters. Make her happy, sit through it, and start building up points for Valentine’s Day.
